How bright a projector do you need?
Brightness, measured in lumens, is the specification that decides whether a projector works in your room — and it is the one most often under-bought. The question is not how bright the projector is in isolation, but how much ambient light it has to compete with.
- A dark home theatre room needs the least brightness; excess brightness there actually hurts contrast.
- A conference room with blinds drawn needs a moderate amount.
- A classroom with windows and lights on during the day needs substantially more.
- A hall or auditorium with a large screen and long throw needs the most, because the same light is spread over a far bigger image.
- If the room cannot be darkened, buy for the room as it will actually be used, not as it looks with the lights off.
Throw distance and screen size
Every projector has a throw ratio that fixes the relationship between how far it sits from the screen and how wide an image it produces. Get this wrong and the projector either cannot fill the screen or overshoots it, and no amount of adjustment afterwards will fix it properly.
Digital keystone correction is not the answer either — it squeezes the image into shape by discarding pixels, which costs sharpness. It is far better to mount the unit at the right distance and height in the first place, which is what we work out before recommending a model.
Screens, and why a wall is not one
Projecting onto a painted wall costs nothing and looks it. Wall paint scatters light unevenly, the surface texture shows in the image, and off-white paint shifts the colour of everything on screen.
A proper screen has a uniform, correctly gained surface and a black border, and the border matters more than people expect — it visually contains the image and makes the picture look sharper and more contrasted than the same image on bare wall. For rooms in constant use, a motorised screen keeps the surface clean and flat between sessions.

How many lumens do I need for a classroom projector?
More than for a darkened room. A classroom with windows and lights on during the day needs substantially higher brightness than a home theatre or a boardroom with the blinds drawn, because the projector is competing with ambient light. We recommend based on the room as it is actually used rather than as it looks with the lights off.
Can I project onto a wall instead of buying a screen?
